How to: Gold and Gold Jewelry Appraisal

Many people want to sell their gold jewelry, but there are a few things you should know before you try and sell it yourself. You first need to do a self-appraisal. Do your own gold appraisal first to get an idea of how much it’s worth; gold jewelry is very valuable, and there are plenty of people looking to scam you out of it.

Gold Jewelry AppraisalYou have to evaluate your gold jewelry before you take it to a jeweler, pawn broker or online gold buyer (best deal!). These three things will guarantee your success in gold appraisal. You want the most value for your gold jewelry and here’s how you do it:

Karat Marking
Karat is a measure of purity for your gold jewelry. Inspect your gold jewelry by looking for a karat mark. Karat marks come in different levels: 24K means pure gold, 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58% and 10K is 42% gold. A karat stamp is usually located on the clasp of necklaces and bracelets. The mark is often on the inside band of rings. If you want to appraise earrings, look for the karat mark on the fastener.

Your Gold Jewelry’s Condition
Whether it’s old or new gold jewelry, you can sell it. Gold jewelry in great condition has more value.

Weight of your Gold
The price of your gold jewelry will depend on its weight. The more it weighs, the more cash you’ll get for it. Got any old Mr. T chains? Ka-ching!

Selling gold jewelry is a lucrative business, and you want the most value from your gold jewelry. Self appraisal really helps. Turn your pot of gold into instant cash!

Great article! I hear good and bad things about some of the gold buyers. However, everyone should first research and THEN sell. If you sell based on impulse you could end up selling it for far less than it’s worth. Go to http://www.goldvox.com and checking out what other people have to say about the service first. Also, if you have used them before let other people know if you had a good experience! If not, tell them to run far away – fast! lol. Good luck!

I have a pair of 14K pierced earrings that were appraised in 1985 for $210.00. I have to sell them, plus a few additional pieces, and I would like to know what I might expect when I try to sell them.
    Thank you.

Lovely tips. Many people have no idea how much is their jewelry box worth. I would like to suggest that people don’t sell their gold to small pawn-shops. Some of them will want to con you.

Great article…I did not know what the different karats meant, and I didn’t know that 24K is 100% pure gold.

It might also be a good idea to take your gold to several gold buyers. You might get more money this way.

It really does seem like a good idea to evaluate your gold before taking it anywhere to be appraised. You need to know what you have, just in case you end up dealing with someone shady or ignorant. Better to be safe than sorry.

Very informative article. I will have to buy a scale that will weigh the jewelry I have. Question though. If you have something that is made of gold and is gold but does not have a stamp of the karats. How do you find what karat it is? Is the some kind of solution you can put it in to find out?

After you have the first jeweler’s appraisal, take some time to obtain three more appraisals. Start with, “How can I price my gold jewelry for resale” and find out what price they use for pure gold.
